
If you are a handyman, chances are you will not want to hire an Orlando locksmith to install your new smart lock. Now, even though you are a skill full person, these types of locks will require a little more than skills, as the system is more complicated.
Today, we will give you step-by-step direction on how to install a smart lock in a simple, quick and easy way! All the materials and tools you will need are a screwdriver or drill, adapters, mounting plate, an adhesive strip and your smart lock.
Start with the deadbolt

Step 1: Prepare your existing deadbolt
Use the supplied adhesive strip to hold the keyed side of the lock in place
Step 2: Remove your current deadbolt.
Remove your current deadbolt by losing the two screws on the back of the interior of the deadbolt. For this, you can use a screwdriver or a drill. If there is an additional back plate, remove it. Make sure you unlock your deadbolt before removing the lock.
The next steps involve the Mounting plate
Step 3: Prepare the Mounting Plate
The mounting plate has two adjustable screw-holes that you can change. Remove the screws from the old lock and insert them into the front of the mounting plate.
Step 4: Attach the Mounting Plate
Tighten the screws by hand until the mounting plate secures to the door. For this make sure you have your screwdriver at hand.
The Adapter part of the process
Step 5: choose your adapter
You can do this step before the installation. Now you must be very careful as there are several styles of adapters in the market. There are specific adapters for each lock brand. You can always look up your lock brand online, and you will find the adapter that your lock is compatible with.
Step 6: attach the adapter
Once you have selected the adapter compatible with your lock and places the adapter onto the tailpiece. A tip: One of the triangle shaped nubs should facing up if you have the correct adapter.
Step 7: Rotate to unlocked position
Rotate your smart lock all the way to the unlocked position, for this you will need moderate force. The direction you turn will depend on which side of the door your deadbolt is on.
Step 8: Open the wing latches
Pull out both side wing latches to prepare for mounting.
This next step involves connecting your smart lock to the door.
Step 9: Attach the Smart Lock on the door
Before placing your Smart Lock on the door, ensure the thumb turn is in the correct unlocked position. Make sure the back of the lock is flushed with the door. To secure the Smart Lock, clamp down both side wing latches to the mounting plate.
Step 10: Remove the faceplate:
Slide the top of the front face upwards to remove the battery compartment cover.
Step 11: Remove the battery tab:
While you hold the batteries in place, remove the clear plastic battery isolation tab on the left side. Make sure that the battery is in its compartment.
Pro tip: Avoid pulling the long gray tab, as it will remove all the batteries.
Step 12: Replace the faceplate
Place the faceplate back onto your Smart Lock over the batteries until it clicks into place.
Installing the sensor to the door
Step 13: Install the door sensor
Most smart locks have a door sensor, this one enables your lock to know when the door is open and closed.
For the installation you will need to
- place the sensor on the door frame, in the proper identified mounting position. Just make sure to align the pill shape vertically!
- Screw the sensor into frame, just be sure that your lock is set up and calibrated.
- Attach the cover by pressing it against the sensor.
- Calibrate your Lock, for this you will need to open and close your door to make sure the door is calibrated.
Step 14 Install the app on your phone
To end up with the installation process you only need to install the lock app on your phone. Most smart lock devices come with a security app that send you messages and keeps track or irregular activity. It is important that you install the app in your phone so you have the opportunity to follow up on your home security.
